It all started in 2014…
The Lowcountry Wind Symphony (LWS) is a non-professional, all-volunteer wind band whose mission is to provide a quality musical experience for its members, while educating and entertaining audiences in our area communities. The LWS was formed by a group of eight musicians who had interest in performing in a new concert band environment. Before making an initial call for musicians, the first order of business was to establish a Board of Directors, create By-Laws and to incorporate as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
The initial call for musicians brought a few additional players as weekly rehearsals began in October of 2014. The first public performance of the band was on May 6, 2015, a joint concert with the Beaufort High School Concert Band and the Parris Island Marine Band. From that first public performance, the number of new members grew during the summer that followed. Beginning in the fall of 2015, a full concert season was planned and scheduled. From the donations received from individual donors and corporate sponsors taking ads in the band’s Playbill instruments and equipment were purchased, and the band was now on a firm footing.
Celebrating its ‘birthday’ in October, there remains one constant – a commitment to bring quality musical entertainment to audiences in the Lowcountry with no charge to attend our concerts. Each concert season includes 6-8 performances beginning with the annual celebration of Veterans in November to the year-end concerts in April/May. There is a breadth of musical experience among the players in the Lowcountry Wind Symphony, including amateurs, semi-professional and professional musicians and students who graciously volunteer their time and talent to share their love of music with area audiences
. . . or as our slogan states – ‘Exploring What’s Musically Possible’.
